Cable or DSL

Choosing a broadband Internet service provider can be a daunting task. If you are not familiar with the terminology involved then even just choosing a technology is tough. The two major services our there are Cable Internet and DSL.

Cable
Cable service providers us the same coaxial cables that bring television to your TV set to also bring you broadband Internet access. Most cable modems are an extra box you plug into both your computer and your cable outlet. This lets a user watch TV and surf the Internet at the same time. And, like with DSL service, you have instant Internet access just by turning on your PC.

Regular cable Internet services have download speeds between four to six Mbps. That is about 70 times faster the dial-up connections. Because cable Internet is delivered from your local cable company you can choose to package Internet access, digital TV, and digital phone service in order to save some additional money every month.

DSL
DSL service uses regular phone lines to also transmit high-speed data. This allows your phone company to also provided Internet, TV, and phone services. DSL is one for the fastest growing broadband technologies for both personal use and businesses.

A typical DSL connection lets customers download data at up to 1.5 Mbps and an upload at 256 Kbps. Unfortunately, DSL has a downside. The further from the provider's central office the slower the connection speed will be. But for most users this is not a problem because the disadvantage is offset by the lower monthly fees. As well as, like cable broadband, DSL offers an always-on connection.

To summarize, if you only want an always-on connection with a small monthly fee then DSL is a good fit. If you prefer the highest connection speed offered then a cable modem will suite you best.

Who Cares About Internet Gurus?

Most of us have had a share of self-proclaimed experts telling us to do this or that in order to make money online. Who are these people teaching us the art of being rich? Why are they called the Internet gurus?

The thing is, there is nothing wrong with Internet gurus. They exist because they want to earn and help at the same time.

Earn. We all need to earn, don't we? Everyone needs to work hard in order to earn. Internet gurus don't just sit there and type away words to convince you to quit your job, and buy their products so you can be an Internet guru just like them.

A real Internet guru is someone who has spent long months or years to study the ins and outs of online marketing. Not that it's necessary to get a bachelor's degree in order to become an Internet guru. You don't even need a diploma to become an online marketing expert.

These Internet gurus, degree holder or not - have gone through intricate trial and error procedures that, in some ways, might have discouraged them to go on. It took them guts, patience, and perseverance before things finally turn out positive.

What you buy from Internet gurus are their time and effort, the toils and troubles that they had to go through to learn everything about online marketing. And to impart this hard-earned knowledge about online marketing should, at least, cost something.

Help. This is the measure of being a real Internet guru. Since looking for help is the first thing that every wannabe online marketer does, hundreds of Internet gurus see this as a big window for them to earn, they'd offer to send newsletters or sell online guides which, they claim, can help you become the best online marketer in town.

Internet gurus should always be eager to help others. Of course, in his mind, he might have the idea of earning while helping. You might agree if I say that the Internet is not a charity institution. But neither is the Internet made for the sole purpose of ripping off people. What you should watch out for are "Internet gurus" who claim that they know everything about online marketing and are willing to help, but are actually out to rip you off.

With thousands of Internet users claiming to be gurus, it's important to tell which among them are genuine. There are thousands of scammers out there who'll do nothing for you but to rip you off. So keep your eyes open.

Does The Apple iPhone Measure Up To Its Hype?

The hype machine for the Apple iPhone was in full swing right up to its official launch on June 29, 2007. During the run up to its launch, Apple shrewdly whetted the publics appetite for the iPhone by showing off its alluring design while keeping many details about the iPhone shrouded in mystery. So what is the iPhone exactly and more importantly, is it all Apple says it is?

The Apple iPhone is actually three devices in one: a cell phone, a wide screen iPod, and a wireless Internet device. It measures in at 4.5?x 4?x 0.46?and weighs in at 4.8 ounces. Not exactly small, but the iPhone has a pretty slim profile, which further adds to its appeal.

The core of the Apple iPhone is its 3.5?touch screen. The touch screen of the iPhone has caused more than a little controversy. A touch screen provides no tactile feedback, which can make users less secure about what they enter on it. Apple is confident that once users get accustomed to the iPhones touch screen then all will be good. However, hardcore critics remain unconvinced that the touch screen will be without its problems. The area of greatest concern is users who rely heavily on texting. Will they be able to whip out short text messages on the iPhones touch screen without stumbling?

The Apple iPhone of course is also an iPod, which will play both MP3 music files downloaded from iTunes as well as video files. The iPhone syncs like an iPod to either a Mac or a PC. However, users will not be able to wirelessly download files from iTunes. This will require a physical connection to a computer.

The cell phone portion of the iPhone supports quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900), thus making it a true world phone?capable of working in the US, Europe, and Asia. On the data side, the iPhone uses 2.5G EDGE technologies. However, the multimedia features of the iPhone would be better served by the broadband capabilities of 3G networks, such as UMTS and HSDPA, which interestingly enough, AT&T now supports. One saving grace is that the iPhone will come with built-in WiFi to access high-speed Internet connections.

The iPhones battery is rated for 8 hours of talk time and 6 hours of Internet use. The battery talk time was initially rated for 5 hours, but was upgraded by Apple prior to release of the iPhone. This will make it the longest lasting cell phone battery second only to some Sony Ericsson cell phones. The iPhone is rated for 24 hours of audio playback and the battery can retain its charge in standby mode for up to 10 days.

Additional features include a 2 Mega-pixel digital, which is a high enough resolution to produce some crisp digital photos. The iPhone also supports BlueTooth technology. A feature that the iPhone will not support initially is GPS. This may disappoint some potential customers, but a workable alternative is to access Google Maps via the built-in Safari browser for your navigation needs.

A particularly cool feature of the iPhone, that may also prove to be very functional, is a series of built-in sensors that detect how you're holding the iPhone. A proximity sensor knows when you bring the phone to your ear and will dim the screen and shut off the touch screen. Theres an ambient light sensor that adjusts brightness to save battery power, and theres even an accelerometer that knows when to switch between landscape and portrait mode. Pretty slick, huh?

As of this writing, its not possible to say for sure how the Apple iPhone will catch on with consumers. However, given Apples track record for producing life-changing products such as the Mac and iPod, as well as a brilliantly executed marketing campaign, the smart money is on the Apple iPhone being a huge seller, perhaps in the same league as the iPod.
